My 2 year blogiversary, and a very special giveaway of Phoebe Howard's book!

Two years ago, on July 19th, 2007, I started my blog. Looking back, I posted four times on that day! I envisioned my blog as an online scrapbook, a place to save my favorite pictures that were beginning to overwhelm my laptop. Here is my very first post:

I have always had a love for art, design, and architecture. I go through periods in which I will obsess on architecture and homes, then I will morph into an obession with furniture and interior design (never fabric, just furniture). Then I will look at Etsy and get obsessed with art again, and take an art class.

I love to research, and can spend hours on the internet tracking down where that piece of furniture in that favorite design magazine came from. I have recently discovered a treasure trove of information on blogs devoted to art and interior design.

Over the past two years, my blog has become so much more than an online scrapbook to me! It has become a place to share and exchange ideas with a community of people who love design, architecture, and art as much as I do. There have been some wonderful moments, and posts that have really made me think in new directions. I have learned so much from my readers, and have developed real friendships with fellow bloggers and readers. My blog has enabled me to really define and refine my own style, and has caused me to see things in a different way. As an extra bonus, it is been a true honor to have been selected for the Washington Post blog watch 9 times over the past 18 months.

One of the turning points in my blog came from an unexpected source. Designer Phoebe Howard contacted me and asked if I would be interested in profiling her Atlanta city apartment on my blog. I had never done anything like this before, and felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Would I be able to do the apartment justice? I am handy with a camera, but not a professional by any stretch of the imagination. When I met Phoebe that day, and she gave me a tour of the apartment, I knew it would all be fine, and I loved writing up the post. To get a private tour of a designer's home, and hear the thought process that went behind every design decision, was a thrill and a honor. It made me realize that I could push beyond the boundaries of what I had been doing with my blog. Since profiling Phoebe's apartment, I have profiled several beautiful homes that belong to wonderful and talented people (both in Atlanta and beyond), and I have plans for more of these kind of profiles over the next year.

In honor of my two years of blogging, I have a VERY special giveaway - Phoebe Howard's book 'Pretty'. This book is a wonderful treasure, and is not available in stores; it was compiled and published by Phoebe and her team, and represents the best of her work over the past decade (some of which has never been published on either Phoebe's website or in magazines). In the introduction, Phoebe writes:

Pretty, by definition, is something that attracts with delicacy and grace.

Pretty is not imposing or formidable, not handsome or stunning. It is neat and elegant without elevation or grandeur. It is attractive but not grandly conceived.

Pretty is the term I use most often use when describing my style of decorating.

When creating pretty rooms, I feel that a classic, timeless quality emerges. My goal is for the rooms to entice and enchant guests upon entering, with the eye not drawn to any one thing in particular.

The book is divided into two main parts: 'neutral', and 'color'. It also contains a section with all of the magazine articles that have featured Phoebe's work. Normally this book is used for internal marketing purposes, but I have a special copy to give to one of my lucky readers! To enter the giveaway, please leave a comment on this post. Perhaps you could tell me whether you have a favorite post of mine. Or just say hello! I will pick the winner in a random drawing from the readers who comment. All comments made through Tuesday, July 21 at midnight will be considered, and the winner will be posted on Wednesday morning! (Giveaway is now closed, and the winner is Jen from Our Home in the Country. Thank you for participating!)

One of my favorite rooms designed by Phoebe.

If you haven't seen the Washington Post article on Phoebe Howard in the July 16 paper, I highly recommend it - you can see it online here. I also recommend the Mrs. Howard blog, written by the talented Leah Kennelly. Don't miss the new feature on the before and after of a room designed by Phoebe - the first room featured is a bedroom, and the transformation is stunning!

As always, thank you for reading my blog. I look forward to many more years of writing about the things that inspire me!

  77. Best wishes to you for sharing with your readers your talents and good taste to showcase some really pretty houses and interiors for 2 years now. Keep up the good work!

Your last blog on Ms. Kassler's former home, or at least the exterior landscaping surrounding the front door, made me cringe with the changes the new owner's landscape designer/service made to the original plan. Why must supposedly professional people find it impossible to leave well enough alone? Is bad taste growing up madly in Buckhead for the sake of change? I rather think it might be. I think this blog will go down as my favorite of all time! BD

  78. Congratulations on your two year blogiversary. I discovered your blog a few months ago through a "House Beautiful Magazine" link. I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised I was to discover that you were blogging from Atlanta, which made the content even more relevant.

My "design history" has taken me from a housing development in upstate New York, where I pushed furniture around a bedroom that I shared with one of my 7 siblings, to my current home which we recently built here in East Cobb County, where we have four extra bedrooms to share with friends and family when they visit. I love Mariette Himes Gomez, Roderick Shade and Barbara Barry. One of my favorite design books is "Style and Grace: African Americans at Home", by Michael Henry Adams. My latest design books are, "The French Room" by Betty Lou Phillips, and "domino The Book of Decorating, by domino editors. I collect cookbooks, I have over 200. My favorite cookbook is anything by Ina Garten , Edna Lewis or Scott Peacock. I love Art and art books and I am an avid reader. Some of the novels I've read this summer are, The Story of Edgar Sawtell, by David Wroblewski, "The Summer Kitchen" by Lisa Wingate, and "Testimony", by Anita Shreve. I have gone from reading "Conran's House Book", to Architectural Digest, which I never thought I'd be able to afford.

I enjoy your blog, because it celebrates all things beautiful while at the same time remaining fresh and "aspirational". You have not told us what to do, but you have shown us what is possible. It has become my learning tool as well as my source for ideas for my own home. I try to get to every show home that I can and your blog brings them right to my computer. I love the fact that you have not only taken us into homes that you love, but you have opened your own home and have asked your readers to send in their ideas for problems you may be having with your rooms. I am thinking particularly about your foyer which is also my challenge. Although I am not a designer, I love beautiful things and "Things That Inspire", is at the top of my list. If I were limited to one sentence, it would be: Things that Inspire is the quintessential blog!

  93. Happy Anniversary! It is my one-year anniversary reading your blog and have been so inpsired by peeking into your design world. I was absolutely delighted when I stumbled across your blot a year ago. It coincided with our move to a new house. As a working mother of 3 busy teenagers, I wanted a totally fresh, clean and calming look for our new house. Over the last year I have perused and studied your old and new blogs for design ideas that to apply to my house. On a tight budget (and without the design resources offered in bigger cities), Things That Inspire truly inpired and transformed the decor in our new home. 94. I look forward to many more years of inspirations. Congrats.
I just featured Phoebe's famous blush pink rooms. Her works is so clean, elegant & still relaxed & not forced. I love the way they look alive & undecorated: the hallmark of design artistry.

A favorite that comes to mind is the feature on the new house in Atlanta. (May 25) The house and the coverage were both brilliant. Thank you for bringing that and hundreds of other inspiring design features to me.

  115. Happy Blogiversary to you! I love Phoebe Howard's work and your post on her apartment was my absolute favourite. I still dream of her floors... the herringbone patterns... the exquisite tile in her kitchen. That was a great post - and true to your name, inspiring!

  116. I am a relatively recent follower of yours and I love your passion for all things that inspire you. Reading your 2nd anniversary post was very moving because I know how hard it is to initiate something like this and to put yourself "out there". I am a piano lover who recently attended the Van Cliburn Piano Competition and kept a blog during the Preliminaries. However, the thought of musical devotees reading my thoughts was too intimidating, and I never opened my blog up to the public. Perhaps I dhal try again and take a chance.

I also love beautiful spaces, beautiful gardens, ballet, classical music, beautiful landscapes, painting, architecture, etc. In short, I am a beauty junkie!

I really have enjoyed your blog. Keep finding beauty and report on it--the world needs more of this.

  117. Congratulations on your two years! Your blog is inspiring to me, and I always look forward to your posts. I remember very clearly the one on Phoebe Howard's home which was wonderful. I would say that probably my favorite post of yours is the piano post because I have played since I was a child. Also I love your "Light on Two Sides". So many good ones to choose from. I would absolutely pour over that book! How happy am I that she is opening a Charlotte store in a few weeks.

  124. The remarkable thing to me about your blog is that while the photos are professional, the writing is professional, the research is professional, and the content is presented professionally, the FEEL of the blog is personal. despite everything being "done" really well, you make part or all of the subject attainable through attention to the parts that make the whole. the variety of material and ideas is to your credit: you may fixate on some aspect of design, and present many examples of your interest but you have so many interests that i never feel like i'm seeing the same old thing again. i am regularly impressed by the depth of the content you send with your photos. and on top of all that you actually REPLY to comments. if that isn't personal, i don't know what is! this is no catch-all that catches your fancy, but a beautifully and thoughtfully recorded collection of things that inspire! congrats on a productive and inspiring two years! jane

I can't think of a more appropriate give away for Things That Inspire than a book by Mrs. Howard herself! Pretty is how I would describe your blog. 143. Congratulations on two years of successful writing. You have introduced me to design blogs. Nearly every morning I check yours. I am always excited when you have written a new one. Then I check the blogs listed in your sidebar. Of all your blogs I have enjoyed, my favorites have been the one which traced the history of the home in Newport way back to its society days and its French predecessor, next, the Fourth of July entry on the unbelievable remake of the columned colonial, and finally, the home of the young designer who built a gorgeous "carport" instead of a garage! Thanks for the time and effort you put into writing such informative and well illustrated entries. Happy anniversary.

  170. Dear TTI:

Having read your prior blogs for most of the past 2 years, I have learned many things.

I began reading many design books and blogs when I was embarking on a gut renovation of my pre-war apartment. I find some blogs interesting, some erudite, some dreadful, some amusing, some merely vanity sites.

I have found your site different than many because you consistently choose rooms that have a balance and elegance and seemingly reject those that are faddish, pretentious, overdone, etc. I well realize that doing so is not an easy task, especially when you base much of your blog on homes in Atlanta, where many do not exercise similar restraint.

You introduced me to Mrs. Howard's site which is very beautiful. I am sure that I would enjoy her book. Regardless, I look forward to your future posts.

    Sincerely yours,

    Barbara

I'm still trying to figure out proper blogging etiquette and have never commented. My favorite post was the one about Christopher Alexander's theory about light on two sides of a room. You might say I am a real estate junkie. I've moved my family three times in the past five years (all in the same neighborhood). I think the closing attorney is beginning to think I'm nuts -- especially because we have two children under three! Your post finally helped me realize what I was looking for in a house.

As a fellow Atlantan, but relatively new to the area, I enjoy seeing so much your posts on local architectue and your view on each. You introduced me to Phoebe Howard and her lovely style. I like the title of her book, "Pretty", it is an interesting concept to ponder and may be a word not used as often as it should. Some writers want a "wow" factor and use words like stunning, or outstanding or...and miss the simple elegance of "pretty." Congratulations to you on your blogiversary, keep up the great work, I always enjoying popping in to see what you are up to!
