Inspirational Artist - Wayne Thiebaud

A few years ago, I discovered the art of Wayne Thiebaud. Best known for his pop art treatment of cafeteria style foods...cakes, ice cream, pies, hamburgers, hot dogs...he captured these everyday objects that can be found "anywhere in this country [the USA], but only in this country". Many of Thiebaud's paintings of show a fascination with basic shapes and forms, and orderliness of arrangement of these forms.

Thiebaud is still living, and continues to influence artists today. There has been a resurgence in interest in a realistic portrayal of everyday objects, captured in isolation; many of the leading artists of this genre credit Thiebaud as an instrumental influence on their work.

  3. Dianamuse - I really enjoy your blog too! Please feel free to add my link.

Marissa, I only put a few examples of his work on this post...he has so many more! Art.com has some prints of his work. One other source might be the museum shops at the places that have his original works. Artchive has the best list of works for Thiebaud:

  5. Hi Kate-

Thiebaud was born in 1920, so he is pretty old now...also, he is one of the icons of pop art. But, there are SO many artists whose work has the feel of Thiebaud. I will do a post sometime over the next few days on some of my favorite artists who do realism/everyday objects. Some of these artists even sell on ebay, and are very reasonable.

  7. These are delicious (for lack of a better word). I love his style--especially the pies. They look almost Hopper-esque to me.
