Fourth of July by Childe Hassam

One of my favorite painters is American Impressionist Childe Hassam (1859-1935), and I think it is this beautiful painting that first captured my heart:

Fourth-July-1916-Hassam
Fourth of July, Childe Hassam, 1916

This painting is in a private collection, but was on tour a few years ago.

I purchased this book on the art of Childe Hassam, and often take it out to enjoy his beautiful paintings, in particular his flag series.  Click here to purchase on Amazon
The painting on the cover is  Allies Day, May 1917 (1917).

Happy 4th of July!

  10. The flag series is really wonderful. During a White House West Wing tour early in Obama's tenure, I was so pleased to see he chose one of the paintings to hang in the Oval Office. Just perfect!

  14. I adore his work, and purchased a smaller book of his work many years ago right after college. This looks wonderful. I had my book out (opened) on the living room coffee table yesterday! His images stir the soul.

  19. Hi Holly -
Hope your 4th was fun and festive! When I worked at the Smithsonian, I loved visiting the American Art museum. Among my favorite artists there: Childe Hassam, Abbott Thayer, and John Singer Sargent. I almost accepted a position with that museum....back then you could pick a painting to hang, on rotation, above your desk (due to limited storage prior to renovation).
    Cheers,
    Loi
