One of my favorite painters is American Impressionist Childe Hassam (1859-1935), and I think it is this beautiful painting that first captured my heart:
Fourth of July, Childe Hassam, 1916
This painting is in a private collection, but was on tour a few years ago.

I purchased this book on the art of Childe Hassam, and often take it out to enjoy his beautiful paintings, in particular his flag series. Click here to purchase on Amazon.
The painting on the cover is Allies Day, May 1917 (1917).
Happy 4th of July!

Amazing! I have not seen this painting, but it fills my heart with patriotism for our wonderful country. Happy 4th of July to all!
ReplyDeleteAbsolute perfection, it stirs in me, both awe at the beauty and a big wave of patriotism when I see it....fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th Holly! There was a large exhibit of Hassam's art at the Nelson Atkins here a few years back, so inspiring!

ReplyDeleteThe flag series is really wonderful. During a White House West Wing tour early in Obama's tenure, I was so pleased to see he chose one of the paintings to hang in the Oval Office. Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteI am SUCH a "flag person"...you either are or not. Thanks! franki

Hi Holly -
ReplyDeleteHope your 4th was fun and festive! When I worked at the Smithsonian, I loved visiting the American Art museum. Among my favorite artists there: Childe Hassam, Abbott Thayer, and John Singer Sargent. I almost accepted a position with that museum....back then you could pick a painting to hang, on rotation, above your desk (due to limited storage prior to renovation).
Cheers,
Loi
Thank you for sharing this painter and book with us. Love the paintings!
