Last month I wrote a post about chimney pots, an architectural design element I had truly never noticed before, and now I see all over Atlanta.
Our chimney pots were recently installed, and I caught an interesting glimpse of them out of the quirky window that is in my daughter's bathroom (the space didn't really allow for a big window, so my architect created a little one to enable some natural light). I enjoy this unexpected view so much that I might need to go peek out of her bathroom window on occasion!
These chimney pots are from Superior Clay, and are the Hampshire style. I love that curved band on the side.

My in-laws just re-modeled their Georgian-style home here in Nashville (raised the roof to add a functional 3rd floor and to help make some of the previous additions to the home look a bit more authentic to the age/style of the house)- so since they did this they re-did the chimneys too and added the clay pots...my mother-in-law had the same reaction as you did- never thought of them before...but loved them once they were installed! Oh, I went by Made Goods...beautiful pieces!!! Take care, Caroline
ReplyDeleteI love that unusual ribbon edge on your chimney pots. Such an unexpected detail. Isn't it neat to find those little unexpected things when you're walking through your future home? Even though you picked them out, they can strike you as such a neat little touch when in place.
ReplyDeleteGreat chimney pots, but what catches my eye is the roof! What is the material?
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Things are coming along nicely...
ReplyDeleteThese were definitely worth the hunt. Terrific!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing the things you become knowledgeable about when you build your own house. You selected some wonderful chimney pots!
ReplyDeleteThe roof is slate - a bit of a splurge, but the roofline was kind of tricky and we decided to do a roof that would be there a long, long time! I love it - one of my favorite elements so far (along with the chimney pots).
ReplyDeleteI was just writing about details today and this is a perfect example - they look great - and I can totally relate to peeking through your daughter's bathroom window for that special view - it's those little quirks that make a house special!!
ReplyDeleteLike a view from the palace. Looks ancient. What is the story on the "ribbon" edge (I don't know what that is) and the curvy diagonal? Got an up close picture?
ReplyDeleteAren't those gorgeous?? I am in love with your slate roof!! Can't wait to see more pictures.
ReplyDeleteYour roof appears to be in the same tones as my slate roof. I hope yours is real slate and not the synthetic kind that bleaches out over the years and must be recoated. Believe it or not, many of these synthetic roof slates are coming out of Belgium. I have a house in my neighborhood where the former owners when building used that slate. The new owners have spent a fortune over the years recoating. Chimney pots are an important element and I often look at mine as admiringly as you with the same sense that it makes a huge difference in the grandeur of a home. Lovely picture as well.
ReplyDeleteI"m wild about chimney pots.
ReplyDeleteVery Sloane Square, and very beautiful.
Yours are wonderful!
Yes, real slate for the roof - definitely our biggest splurge. We decided to focus on the architecture of the house instead of the most expensive finishes. The slate is Vermont slate, a mix of three different colors. It tapers in size as it hits the eaves. I am SO thrilled with it!
ReplyDeleteMolly, I think we have the same taste. Our roof is Vermont slate, a mix of three colors and I have never stopped loving it and neither will you. You are making good lifelong choices up front. The splurging on the inside can come over time as you live in the house and the rooms begin to speak to you.
ReplyDeleteI love those chimney pots! Even this little glimpse of your roof makes me so excited for you. I would love to see the entire facade!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how old your daughter is, but I suspect that this view will always be a happy memory for her. ...Mark
ReplyDeleteThat's a great frame you made for yourself. I can't wait to see the finished house you are creating. I know it will be fab ! Thanks for visiting.
ReplyDeleteI love odd little quirky windows... it really adds so much character and uniqueness. The slate and the chimney pots complete the vignette.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the chimney pots all over European city - never thought about Atlanta having them too! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHolly,
ReplyDeleteI never noticed chimney pots until you wrote about them on your blog. And, now I notice them everywhere.
Beautiful! What did you end up going with for your exterior? The brick of your chimneys? Did you limewash it?
ReplyDeleteYour chimney post looks great!
ReplyDeleteSuch a special view! We just put on a slate roof on our house. It was worth the splurge.

I've never seen chimney pots like that. If chimney pots are a must have they might as well be lovely to look at! Lovely choice!
ReplyDeleteMy best,
Tricia
I've never seen those, and they are actually pretty cool. We have just regular chimney's here.
ReplyDeleteI was telling someone earlier today that beautiful attention to the details makes all the difference in a home...your chimney post and slate roof...perfection!!
ReplyDeleteNice chimney pots. :)
