Progress on the Chairs

A few weeks ago, I posted about a pair of semi-antique chairs that have been sitting around my house, waiting for a makeover. The post on my blog (and all of the great comments) spurred me into action! The chairs have just returned from the woodshop, stripped and sanded, and are going to the art studio today for a specialty finish!

  3. I decided to use the R&G linen sateen in rice, and do the welting (and the back of the chair) in the linen sateen in artemnesia (which is a lovely green with a bit of blue). I am going to do the pillow in lemondrop!

  4. The green in the lemondrop is the same color as the green of the welting and back of the chair. I hope it all works out!

  6. Someone gave me a great tip. They said to first let the artist give a recommendation without influencing her on some of my ideas. So, I told her about the chest that will be in the front hall (which is weathered parchment), and I showed her a sample of the linens that I will be using. She recommended letting the fruitwood show through, and doing a light finish in which some of the carvings have more of the parchment color. Like it is an old antique that has been painted, stripped, perhaps with a little gilded gold (just a touch) in the deeper carvings. I saw an example on another piece she was working on, and it all seemed to come together. This will provide an excellent contrast to the ivory of the linen. She can't start on it until the new year, but I love the anticipation.

  11. If only I could send things out to be stripped and sanded, instead of having a husband who says "I'll do it." Right after he finishes our dining room table (started in '05). Can't wait to see the finished chairs!

  12. Laura, usually I am a DIY type person whose projects languish in the garage for months on end, so I can relate! It has been quite a treat to have this project done by professionals!

  13. You are so bold! I cannot wait to see the finished product. There is so much potential with bones like those. Your finish and fabric sound like Spring embodied! It will be great to see the finished pieces! The chair has such a stunning silhouette! Have fun with your project ;)
