The House that Keeps Haunting Me

Last year, I did a post on a home that was new on the market and stood out because of its distinctive decor: sophisticated, beautiful, transitional in style and very appealing.  The house had me at the front door - a beautiful shade of blue, which in combination with the cream painted brick and the putty colored shutters makes a striking and inviting exterior.  The fascade is highly symmetrical, yet distinctive with its rounded entrance and small porthole window above the entry.

I wrote about a room in this house again in my 'one picture' post - a blogger challenge in which I had to pick one picture that best represents my design style.  I chose this picture because of the soft palette, the mix of traditional and contemporary elements, the clean lines, and the soothing, tranquil feel of the room.

Shortly after posting my 'one room' post, I received my Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles magazine in the mail (one of my favorite magazines for its coverage of the highlights of the Atlanta art and design scene - and the beautiful Atlanta homes that are featured, many of which I drive by several times a week).  The house was featured on the cover, and the article filled in all of the background on the house and the room that the real estate listing could not; the home is one of the oldest homes in Buckhead, and was renovated by famed Atlanta architect Neel Reid in the 1930s.  The designer is Margaret Bobsyshell, who decorated the house with a crisp color palette that was inspired by famed decorator Dorothy Draper.  The paint color in my 'dream bedroom' is milk pail by Martha Stewart; the linens are by Leontine, and the beautiful bed is by Julia Gray

To read the entire article, please visit the Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles site.  New to the site is a digital version of the magazine, definitely worth checking out.  To subscribe to Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, click here.  To see the real estate listing for this house, please click here.

Postscript: after my friend from the Architecture Tourist commented, I looked up the house in the tax records. I was quite surprised to see the transformation that the house has undergone in the past 10 years. It is amazing what a renovation can do!

  1. For a Neel Reid I'm glad it doesn't have the dark molding. It's so bright inside. It seems classic and classy but not "old." Worth being haunted by, I think.

  2. Terry - it notes that the house was 'renovated' by Reid in the 1930s. I just looked up the house in the tax records, and it is interesting to see how much the current owners renovated: the upstairs was only partial in the home only 10 years ago (it was already painted, but with black shutters - the rounded entrance is a new addition).

  5. i love that they renovated while keeping true to the spirit of the original architecture, and didn't try to tart it up into a tuscan style villa or anything like that!

  6. What a wonderful house. The bones were great to begin with, but the renovation makes it sparkle. Love the coolness of the bedroom.

  7. It seems the updates have only enhanced the original beauty.

Have you ever been to atlantatimemachine.com? That is a fun way to see the now and thens of Atlanta's residential and commercial corridors.

  10. The transformation is amazing. I had to keep flipping up and down to look at it before and after. I almost couldn't see the original house elevation in the current one. I like the renovation very much!

  11. I love the front door on that house. I also love how the inside of the house flows with the feeling of the outside (which in a perfect world is how it should be)!

Big difference on the before and after that's for sure!

  13. It's neat old picture. It sure looked "squatty" with the overgrown foundation planting and black shutters.

The more I look the more I like that modest segmental arch bump over the door and the little porthole window. I don't know why. I think the little window is like a dotting an "i"

  22. It is beautiful indeed. I love how the entrance to the house reachs out to greet you. The door is beautiful in and of itself as is that bedroom. Love the blues. Here in North Carolina, we paint our porch ceilings that color. I'd love to see it in person. Thanks for sharing!

  25. This is a gorgeous home and I love the master bedroom. Do you know what color the master bedroom is painted. It's interesting to see the original home and find it an inspiration for my recent home purchase. Although, no matter how hard I try, my new home will never look like this one.

I'm intimately aware of this property as I had some clients that came within seconds of making an offer. They loved everything about it, but couldn't get beyond being across from the church.

  28. Gorgeous house! I was just looking for information on Martha Stewart's Milk Pail paint for a blog post I am drafting and found your post. Coincidentally, I am also a fan of Dorothy Draper and did a post about her last week.

I am subscribing to your blog because, with at least those two things in common, you probably have things to say that I want to listen to!

I have had this color in my bedroom for a few years now and love it. Hope to have mine posted tomorrow with pics.
