A beautiful Atlanta kitchen

Recently my husband and I were invited for dinner at the home of friends from our children’s school. As soon as I entered the home, I knew that the owners were kindred spirits when it comes to love of interiors, as their home was decorated with such beauty and attention to detail.

The entire house was beautiful, but it was the kitchen that really spoke to me. The house was built in 1990, and a few years ago the owners decided to update the kitchen. With the wonderful team of Will Huff from Huff-Dewberry, as well as kitchen designer Beth Barfield , the kitchen was transformed into a space that combines classic design as well as high function for a family that cooks regularly.

My interior photography skills (or lack thereof) really don’t do this kitchen justice! When the owners renovated, they knew that a large island with a solid work surface suited their style; it provides an uninterrupted surface for preparing food, and also provides a great place for their children to do homework and visit with the cook. I like the contrast of the marble on the perimeter, and the warm wood on the island.

Note how the space above the refrigerator is handled – glass front cabinets! What a clever way to handle a space that is often unused.

The backsplash is a classic subway tile. One of the most charming vignettes in the kitchen is the window over the sink, framed by a lovely Brunschwig & Fils fabric. The sconces on either side of the window are the perfect touch, and mimic the lines of the greenery in the fabric.

The fabric is carried over to the bay window that looks out over the back yard. The paint on the walls was selected to bring out the green in the fabric; Will Huff told me that it is Benjamin Moore Hancock Green (HC-117). I love the upholstered seating that is on one side of the table; it makes the seating area feel very elegant. Also note the touches of glass front cabinets in this kitchen mixed with solid cabinetry.

I am a big fan of herringbone patterns, and immediately noticed the tiles in the backsplash behind the range; they are the same size and shape as the tiles that are used in the subway pattern. It is a subtle touch, but one that I appreciated.

The food pantry is located in the cabinetry between the kitchen and family room. One of the drawers is devoted to cereal, an idea that I want to incorporate into my new kitchen. I appreciate how the kitchen is defined separately from the family room, yet there is great flow and connection between the two rooms.

I have had these pictures for a few months now, and when the owners told me that they were listing their beautiful home for sale, it seemed like the right time to do a post! Here is a picture of the kitchen from the real estate listing; what a difference professional photography and a nice sunny day makes!
