Spotlight on Art 2010

My favorite Atlanta art event begins this Monday evening (February 15, 2010)! The 'Spotlight on Art' Artists Market is my ideal kind of place- thousands of paintings and works from hundreds of artists, all under one roof, in a very relaxed atmosphere. Virtually every genre is represented - contemporary art, pop art, impressionism, realism, sculpture, folk art, children's art. This year, over 350 artists are participating; there are many established gallery quality artists, as well as up and coming emerging artists. Plus, there is a wonderful jewelry area featuring unique pieces from some of the most talented jewelry designers in the Southeast.

Monday, February 15, 2010 – the opening night party! Come see the art (all available for sale) at the opening night of the Artists Market (open bar, light hors d'oeuvres). This is a great event, and since the focus is on the art, it is fun to attend even if you don’t know a soul. Opening night hours: 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. (click here for directions)

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 – 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 – 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Special event: Designer Dash - 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM – designers and art enthusiasts are invited to enjoy coffee and biscuits and tour the collection.

Thursday, February 18, 2010 – 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM

Friday, February 19, 2010 – 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Special event: Sip and Shop - coffee and biscuits on a Friday morning for the before work/after carpool crowd. 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Special event: Cocktails and Canvases, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM – come and meet the artists! Mix and mingle while surrounded by fine art, all available for purchase.

I was able to get a sneak peek of the art that will be at the show; here are some pieces that caught my eye. This is just a small selection of the art that will be available for purchase this week at the artists market! My favorite thing about the market is that the new paintings are put out every day, so there is always something new every time you visit.

Well known artist Helen Durant dropped off her work while I was there. I snapped a quick picture before her work was hung.

Artist Jean Glenn, represented by TEW Galleries (who are participating in this year’s Artists Market), is one of my all time favorites. Every time I look at her paintings I see something new.

All weekend long, the Artists Market team received the art and hung the art in preparation for the big opening night party on Monday (2/15/10). I assisted the team in putting together this wall, with special care and attention to three of my favorite artists: on the left, Tina Steele Lindsey, a fellow blogger and an exceptionally talented artist (see her blog here). On the top middle, an eye catching piece that is built upon many different layers of paint. Just below that, abstract angels trio by Melissa Payne Baker. And on the right, Clara Blalock, whose abstract pieces are so lyrical and beautiful.

Annie Butrus is a perennial blogger favorite; Style Court purchased one of her pieces at last year’s market.

Steve Penley always has beautiful art at the Artists Market, and on the right are a few pieces by Helen Durant.

Artist Mark Boomershine is new to the market this year, and his pop art work gives the market a unique flair.

Another fellow blogger, the Old Post Road, is participating in the folk art section of the market for the first time this year. The Old Post Road blogs about art and design, and after reading her blog and seeing her beautiful artwork, I knew that she would be a wonderful fit for the market. If you like what you see, I recommend that you come early to the market – my prediction is that she will sell out!

Kathryn Fortson is an artist new to the market this year. When I saw this piece come in, I immediately thought about work by iconic American artist Wayne Thiebaut.

I love this artist’s clever and appealing approach to animal art (in the Whimsical section).

The children’s art section is all set up and ready to go!

A wall of folk art, featuring the work of the beloved ‘Cornbread’, freshly hung in preparation for opening night.

The exquisite jewelry counter was all set up and ready to go too.

There is also an extensive impressionism and realism area, but it was not quite ready for photographs. If you are in the market for representational artwork, you will find thousands of paintings with a traditional flair.

Kay Hibbard is one of the artists in the impressionism area.

Ann Rhodes is one of my favorite impessionist artists.

I always appreciate artists who blur the line between genres. Stephanie Wheeler’s art has appeal to many because it is very soft and somewhat abstract, but also impressionistic.
