I was able to get a sneak peek of the art that will be at the show; here are some pieces that caught my eye. This is just a small selection of the art that will be available for purchase this week at the artists market! My favorite thing about the market is that the new paintings are put out every day, so there is always something new every time you visit.
Well known artist Helen Durant dropped off her work while I was there. I snapped a quick picture before her work was hung.
Artist Jean Glenn, represented by TEW Galleries (who are participating in this year’s Artists Market), is one of my all time favorites. Every time I look at her paintings I see something new.
All weekend long, the Artists Market team received the art and hung the art in preparation for the big opening night party on Monday (2/15/10). I assisted the team in putting together this wall, with special care and attention to three of my favorite artists: on the left, Tina Steele Lindsey, a fellow blogger and an exceptionally talented artist (see her blog here). On the top middle, an eye catching piece that is built upon many different layers of paint. Just below that, abstract angels trio by Melissa Payne Baker. And on the right, Clara Blalock, whose abstract pieces are so lyrical and beautiful.
Annie Butrus is a perennial blogger favorite; Style Court purchased one of her pieces at last year’s market.
Another striking Annie Butrus painting at the market this year.
A beautiful wall of art, with works from Christy Kinard and Ann Kendrick Smith (and others).
Steve Penley always has beautiful art at the Artists Market, and on the right are a few pieces by Helen Durant.
More work in the contemporary section.
Artist Mark Boomershine is new to the market this year, and his pop art work gives the market a unique flair.
Another Mark Boomershine piece – he really takes pop art to a whole new level.
Art in the folk art section.
Another fellow blogger, the Old Post Road, is participating in the folk art section of the market for the first time this year. The Old Post Road blogs about art and design, and after reading her blog and seeing her beautiful artwork, I knew that she would be a wonderful fit for the market. If you like what you see, I recommend that you come early to the market – my prediction is that she will sell out!
Kathryn Fortson is an artist new to the market this year. When I saw this piece come in, I immediately thought about work by iconic American artist Wayne Thiebaut.
Another piece by Kathryn Fortson
I love this artist’s clever and appealing approach to animal art (in the Whimsical section).
The children’s art section is all set up and ready to go!
A wall of folk art, featuring the work of the beloved ‘Cornbread’, freshly hung in preparation for opening night.
The exquisite jewelry counter was all set up and ready to go too.
There is also an extensive impressionism and realism area, but it was not quite ready for photographs. If you are in the market for representational artwork, you will find thousands of paintings with a traditional flair.
Kay Hibbard is one of the artists in the impressionism area.
Ann Rhodes is one of my favorite impessionist artists.
I always appreciate artists who blur the line between genres. Stephanie Wheeler’s art has appeal to many because it is very soft and somewhat abstract, but also impressionistic.
The Spotlight on Art Artists Market takes place at Trinity School, 4301 Northside Parkway, just off I-75 in Buckhead (click here for directions). Parking and admission are free. For more information, hours, and directions, visit the website www.spotlightonart.com.

ReplyDeleteCan't wait to stop by the Artists' Market this week! BTW, I'll have a post up about Helen Durant on my blog in a day or two - she's my aunt and I have her work from all of her different iterations in my house. There will be lots of photos of her work never seen before.

ReplyDeleteShould be a great event!
ReplyDeleteYou all have the best events in Atlanta. I love the first Kay Hibbard piece you showed. The Julia Childs piece is great too!
ReplyDeleteAlso - thank you for the lovely comment you left on Ragland Hill Social.
There are several artist from Nashville in this years artist market. Actually one of Mary Cummins (www.maryhcummins.com) piece is in the contemporary section picture above. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou have to see these in person! I have and must say I agree with your choices here, pretty much on the mark. I might add in all frankness that the show all in all is a decent mix of fine art as well as decorator art, something for the serious collector and something for those who like to have fun with a splash of color. Great mix and great show, loads of fun.
ReplyDeleteLooks Fantastic...wish I wasnt on the other side of the world or Id love to be part of it..thanks so much for sharing x
ReplyDeleteSteve Penley is one of my all time favorite artists. Perhaps I hold a slight bias as a graduate of the same art school, but I can remember walking by his portraits hanging in a gallery on North Highland when we ate at Partners growing up. Whether Steve paints Einstein, Reagan or REM, his work abounds with personality through his use of line work and color. While I could wax poetic on Mr. Penley for quite a bit, I also love the work of Mark Boomershine. Thanks for the introduction, TTI!
ReplyDeleteAs an artist, I always appreciate it when someone takes the time to spotlight art. It looks like a wonderful event with tremendously talented artists. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on this event. My husband and I went Saturday at 5pm before they closed at 6pm since we had a dinner to go to at JCT Kitchen. Even on the last day there was some great stuff there. We bought three pieces. Two by Shipley and one by Wheeler! Cannot wait to get them hung!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads-up on this. The kids and I took in the show. Your mention of Wayne Thiebaud reminded me of my fave Will Cotton and so I wrote a post--thanks for the inspiration! :)
