Design seminar: the story of my kitchen (and a sneak peek)

Almost as soon as we started the design process for the new house (10 months before breaking ground), I starting looking for a kitchen designer.  To me, the kitchen is one of the most essential rooms in the house to ‘get right’, as it must be a balance between function and form.  I wanted someone on the team whose sole area of expertise is the kitchen, but also someone who could work with the entire team of architect, designer, and builder.  I wanted the kitchen designer to have a blank slate – the ability to completely shape the space.  I also wanted a collaborative approach to the kitchen, and given that I have over 500 pictures of kitchens in my image files, my expectations were high!  My search was short, because I had heard so many wonderful things about the talented kitchen designer Cynthia Ziegler, and we hit it off immediately. 

Cynthia has designed some of the most beautiful kitchens in Atlanta, and she designed one of my all time favorite kitchens (seen in the picture above), which will be featured in an upcoming issue of AH&L.  I saw this kitchen on a tour of homes a few years ago, and immediately sensed the expertise of a very talented kitchen designer behind the design.

I am excited to announce that Cynthia and I will be talking about kitchen design this Saturday, December 11 at 1 pm at the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House!  The design process for my kitchen will be used as a case study for kitchen design in today’s world, where there is a strong trend to make the kitchen more like a living space, but also a personal need to keep the function of a hard working space .  Technology permitting, we will illustrate the discussion with elevations, layout, and cabinet designs for my new kitchen, and in-process pictures of the space.   Cynthia will also answer questions about current kitchen design.

The event will be held at Craft Atlanta, which is adjacent to the Mansion on Peachtree (the location of the Christmas House), and is complimentary for Christmas House guests.  If you have already seen the Christmas House, you can come to the seminar by showing your ticket stub.

Join kitchen designer Cynthia Ziegler, of Cynthia Ziegler, Inc., and design blogger Holly Street, author of Things That Inspire, as they share the details of the design process for the kitchen in Holly's new house. In this case study for current kitchen design, Cynthia and Holly will discuss the way in which Holly's requirements for function were combined with the desire to make an aesthetic statement in what Holly considers to be the most important room in the house. The resulting kitchen design is truly a personal reflection of Holly's style, and a testament to the importance of a skilled kitchen designer in making her dream a reality. 

Cynthia will also discuss current kitchen trends and design considerations for those who are considering their own kitchen renovation or build.

All seminars will be held at Craft Atlanta, and are complimentary for Christmas House guests.
Please present your ticket stub at the door. Space is limited and admittance is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Special Note: Christmas House guests may return to attend seminars on subsequent days after they have toured the house. A ticket stub is required for admission to seminars, but does not allow for re-admission to the home tour.

Here is the view of the kitchen in progress – not too exciting at this point, but it’s a start!  The kitchen is in a wing, and the large opening is going to be a steel window looking out over the back yard.  The two windows on the other side of the space will be on either side of the range and a curved plaster hood. An island will be in the middle of the space, with a view out the steel windows. The scaffolding in the room is in place so that the framework for the coved ceiling can be built.
